Abstract

Background: Interpersonal relationships in the workplace are often described as an important part of an employee{u2019}s experience at work.Aim: to investigate the impact of civility program on organizational citizenship behaviors among nursing staff at selected teaching hospital. Design: A quasi-experimental (one-group pretest/posttest) design. Setting: five selected intensive care units (ICUs) at selected teaching hospital. Sample: Convenient sample (27) of nursing staff divided into (4) head nurses, (7) charge nurses and (16) bed side nurses. Tools: three tools were utilized in this study; Incivility Behavior Questionnaire to measure the incidence of experienced incivility by nursing staff, Nursing Incivility Observational Check List that measure incivility behaviors among nursing staff and Organizational Citizenship Behavior Questionnaire measuring the level of organizational citizenship behavior. Results: there was a statistically significant difference in mean scores of study subjects regarding all dimensions of both perceived and observed incivility behavior immediately and 3 months post program implementation compared to before as well there was statistical significant difference in organizational citizenship behavior level during different periods of assessment. Finally, highly statistically significant negative correlation was found between perceived as well observed incivility behavior and organizational citizenship behavior dimensions. Conclusion: Overall, the current study concluded that the civility program had a positive impact on organizational citizenship behavior among nursing staff as the study hypothesis were supported and approved that there was statistical significant difference in organizational citizenship behavior level during different periods of assessment. Recommendations: Hospital administrators must establish a zero-tolerance policy regarding incivility. Employers must encourage a supportive work environment in which respectful communication is the norm, and organizational policies are understood and followed. Nursing faculty members have to play key roles in preparing nursing students to foster both a healthy workplace environment and culture of civility
