Knowledge and attitude of dental interns on child abuse after implementation of two educational modules A randomized control trial

Abstract
Aim: To assess the knowledge and attitude of dental interns on child abuse after implementation of two educational modules. Methodology: 138 Dental interns enrolled in Pediatric Dentistry and Dental Public Health Department, Faculty of Dentistry, Cairo University were randomly allocated to two study groups.Lecture group (LG): received the educational material via an interactive lecture. Online group (OG): received the educational material via an online web based link. A questionnaire was filled for the assessment of knowledge and attitude of the dental interns regarding detection and reporting of child abuse cases was given to both groups pre and post the assigned educational module. After the completion of the assigned educational module, a Likert scale was used to assess the participants{u2019} perception of the educational module received.Results: Both the Lecture and Online groups showed a significant increase in their scores (higher percentage of good knowledge) after the implementation of the assigned educational module.However, the LG showed a significantly higher percentage of good knowledge over the OG in the post questionnaires scores. The most rated reason for lack of reporting was Lack of Knowledge followed by uncertainty about diagnosis.Conclusions: Dental schools{u2019} curricula in Egypt don{u2019}t cover the topic detection and reporting of child abused cases and so Dental students are not adequately prepared to detect child abused cases and are unsure of what to do in the event of suspecting a case.The online educational module is an effective tool that can be used to supplement the interactive lectures but can{u2019}t be used as a replacement
