Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the effect of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) with and without Platelet rich fibrin (PRF) on regeneration of rat sciatic nerve after compression. Methods: 45 adult Wister rats were used with body weights ranging from 250 to 300 gm. Animals were divided into 3 groups (15 in each group) according to the procedures as following: 1) Control group (group I), the nerve was compressed without further treatment options. 2) Laser group (group II), the nerve was compressed followed by laser application to the site of injury immediately and for 8 postoperative weeks, AlGaInP laser was used with 808 nm wave length and power energy of 110 mw /cm. 3) Laser and PRF group (group III), the nerve was compressed followed by adding PRF to the site of energy and laser application immediately and for 8 postoperative weeks (study period). Animals were subjected to right sciatic nerve crushing by a portable device and assessed functionally by the “Sciatic Functional Index” (SFI) and histologically by light microscope. The footprints were collected preoperatively, and after 1, 2, 4, 6 and 8 postoperative weeks. |
