Abstract

Marital conflict and disorders of marital relationships have been accompanied by the failure in all the family. Marital conflict is a controversy between two parents, in which each one observes the other one as an obstacle for the fulfillment of his/her objectives. Marital conflict begin with simple arguments, and extend to disputes, fights,and sometime separation. The marital conflict may be obvious or hidden, real or unreal, and conscious or unconscious; which, each kind has special consequences on the whole family especially adolescence as it is a critical period of transition from childhood to adulthood. Marital conflict will increase adolescents susceptibility to engage in health risk behaviors such as smoking tobacco, alcohol consumption, and physical inactivity and experience high level of psychological distress.
Aim of the study The present study was carried out to assess the effect of marital conflict among parents on behaviors of their adolescents. Research Question: What is the effect of marital conflict among parents on behaviors of their adolescents? Research design:-The descriptive co-relational design was utilized to achieve the aim of the study. Research setting: -This study was conducted in preparatory, secondary and high industrial schools
in Shanawan village and Shibin-ElKom city, Menofia governorate to be representative of the target population.Subjects:A purposive sample of 250 adolescents who fulfilled following criteria:-1. Free from any psychiatric illness because these illnesses may interfere with
results.2. Free from any chronic illness such as Diabetes or Hypertension because it may
interfere with results.3. Free from any history of a neurological disorder such as head trauma or injurybecause it may interfere with results.4. Age 12-19 years. Data Collection Instruments:- Theree Instruments were used for data collection(1) A Structured Socio-demographic Questionnaire:The questionnaire was developed by the researcher to assess socio demographic characteristics of the subjects.(2) Self-Reported Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ): SDQ used to assess emotional and behavior problems of adolescents. This scale was originally developed by Goodman et al., (2002) and translated into Arabic and
validated by (Ababneh and Alomari, 2016) and back to English by the researcher. .(3) Kansas Marital Conflict Scale (KMCS):KMCS was originally developed by Kansas (1985) and modified by Cha and Joyce (2017) and translated into Arabic and validated by the researcher. It used to assess marital conflict and back to English by the researcher.The main findings of the study revealed the following: The mean age of the studied adolescents was 17.8 ± 1.7 years. The mean age of the studied adolescent’s parents was 45.3 ± 4.1 years. (79.6%) of the studied parents had moderate marital conflict followed by maximum conflict (10%) then minimum conflict (10.4%) was the lowest percent among studied parents. Maximum Marital Conflict is high among illiterate parents (50%). Maximum marital conflict show a higher significant percentage among late adolescence(13.4%). (67.6%) of female adolescents had the highest score of maximum marital conflict thanmales. Approximately three quarters of studied adolescents seems to suffer from abnormal behaviors (74.4%). (84.2%) of female adolescents had the highest score of abnormal behavioral than male. There was a significant relationship between parents marital conflict and their adolescents behavior. There was a positive significant correlation between total marital conflict score and total behavioral score.Based on the findings of the current study, it can be concluded that: There was there was a positive significant correlation between total marital conflict and behavior among their adolescents Based on the findings of the present study, the following recommendations are suggested:1. Activating the role of marriage counselors by holding lectures, educational seminars and training courses for those who are about to marry of both sexes to educate them about the foundations of a healthy marital life and educate them about the foundations of the correct methods of raising children to avoid behavioral problems because of its impact on family and society as well.
2. Increasing the community awareness about the needs and problems of adolescence , how to
adjust with it and to make an appropriate referral and the available community mental
health services.3. Giving space for family counseling centers on the field level and social networking sites on the internet to address marital issues and the problems between spouses,
finding solutions to them and focusing on treatment methods that are compatible
with our Islamic law.4. Designing counseling programs concerned with developing strategies for managing marital conflict, with the aim of spreading awareness of conflict management
between spouses in a positive way, to improve quality of life and raise the level of
family mental health.5. Providing literacy classes to illiterate spouses especially in rural areas and educating them about the importance of effective resolving of marital conflict due
to its negative impact on their adolescents behavior.In further research:1. Replication of the study using a larger sample in different correctional settings for further confirmation and generalizability of the results.
