Abstract

The basic aim of this research is to suggest that the cognitive approach would facilitate the understanding of the simile, and thus enables better translation strategy. This research examines the strategies of translating four types of similes in the English novel The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo with its Arabic translation فتاة لا يحبها الرجال. with a major aim of answering the following questions: How is simile recognized? What are the cognitive dimensions of reconceptualizing simile in translation, and what are the most common strategies in translating simile? To achieve this objective, a comparative analysis of both the source text and the target text is conducted by adopting a combination of the Cognitive Metaphor Theory and the Conceptual Blending Theory for analyzing the source text, and by adopting Pierini’s (2007) model for investigating translating simile strategies in the target text. Simile types are analyzed on the basis of Bredin’s (1998) classification of simile, which identifies four types of similes: the conventional simile, the standard simile, the creative simile, and the encyclopaedic simile.
The research reaches the finding that recognizing and translating simile depend on creating a conceptual correspondence between one domain in terms of another, which results in revealing the cultural and the universal aspects of these domains before translation. Also, the research demonstrates that the majority of similes are transferred using the literal translation with retaining the same vehicle; a strategy that proves successfulness in conveying the same stylistic effect of the source simile.
