Abstract

With growing electricity rates and anxieties about the environment, new technologies are being developed to absorb energy from every available source and store the excess energy created for later use. Thermal Energy Systems is one such approach. Summer solar radiation can be stored and utilized for heating in the winter, while the cold from the winter air can be used to run air conditioning in the summer. This thesis investigates the solar thermal energy system that is applied to heating swimming pools in detail. It introduces the early stages of renewable energy applications, discusses the types of fuel usage, and the present renewable types and methods and differences between them. Additionally, the swimming pool heating methods, as well benefits of each method. Also, discuss the solar collector types in detail. As well, how the system works. In addition, the heat losses calculation from the swimming pool. Finally, an applied case study on swimming pools was conducted on Egypt’s north coast to determine the best system to be installed, either a solar heating system, or a conventional natural-gas system, with a financial comparison. The results showed that the flat plate solar collector is the most cost-effective system; it saves about 200,000 LE over the 20- year lifetime system. That’s equal to 51% of the reduction and a payback period of less than 8 years.
