Abstract

The thesis entitled, ” Schiff Base Metal Complexes and Their Biological Applications” deals with synthesis, characterization, binding affinity towards biomolecules (ctDNA, tRNA and BSA), and cytotoxicity studies. The complexes under study are: Copper (II) hydrazone complexes (derived from dehdyroacetic acid benzoyl hydrazone) containing DMSO, imidazole, and pyridine as ancillary ligands, palladium(II), platinum(II), copper(II) and silver(I) hydrazone complexes (derived from 3-acetylcoumarin benzoylhydrazone). The results obtained have been completed in three chapters as described below.
Chapter 1 : Introduction This chapter consists of a literature survey of copper(II), palladium(II), platinum(II) and silver(I) hydrazone complexes with illustrative examples, and also, metal complexes derived from dehydroacetic acid and 3-acetylcoumarin hydrazone Schiff bases. Moreover, understating the binding properties of metal complexes with biomacromolecules such as DNA, RNA and BSA and their anticancer activity.
Chapter 2: Results and Discussion This chapter consists of two parts: Part 2.1: Copper(II) complexes of dehydroacetic acid benzoylhydrazone - Synthesis and characterization of mixed-ligand copper(II) complexes; [Cu(L)(H2O)] (1), [Cu(L)(DMSO)] (2), [Cu(L)(imz)] (3) and [Cu(L)(py)]2.CH2Cl2 (4) (where L2- = dehydroacetic acid hydrazone Schiff base (H2L), DMSO = dimethylsulfoxide, imz = imidazole, py = pyridine).
