Abstract

Introduction: Breast cancer is considered one of the most common cancers in women that have more severe mental and emotional effects than other types of cancers . According to the World Health Organization (WHO), breast cancer accounts for about 30% of all cancers among women . Depression and anxiety are the most common disorders that can be present in breast cancer patients through their illness from diagnosis to the end of the disease . Following a breast cancer diagnosis, self-esteem often decrease , which may be due in part to physical changes from surgery and chemotherapy including scarring, hair loss, and weight gain. Consequently, enhancing early recognition of mood and anxiety disorders among breast cancer patients may decrease their discomfort and raise the QOL and even well-being . Therefore, the goal of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of psycho-educational intervention on psychological status among breast cancer patients
The aim of the study was to: Evaluate the effectiveness of psycho-educational intervention on psychological status among breast cancer patients Research hypothesisThe patients who participate in psycho-educational intervention (study group) will have lower mean scores of anxiety and depression than patients who don’t receive the intervention (control group).The patients who participate in psycho-educational intervention (study group) will have high mean scores of self esteem than patients who don’t receive the intervention (control group).
Research subject:A purposive sample of 50 patients with breast cancer who attending at new cancer institute Menoufia University Hospital The researcher divide (50 patients) randomly into two groups ,study group (25 patients) who receive psycho-educational intervention and control group (25 patients) who did not receive psycho-educational intervention . Research Design:A quasi experimental design, two group (study and control group pre/ posttest) was used to achieve the purpose of the study. Research Setting:
This study was conducted at new cancer institute Menoufia University Tools of the Study:Instrument one:-Social characteristics Structured interview questionnaire: This questionnaire was developed by the researcher to assess socio demographic characteristics of the patients as age, education, and income ……. Etc.Instrument two: Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS; Zigmond & Snaith, 1983).This scale was developed by Zigmond and Snaith(1983) as screening technique for measuring symptoms of depression and anxiety.Instrument three : Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale .This scale was developed by Rosenberg (1965). to measure self-esteem .The main findings of the study revealed the following:There was a highly statistically significant difference between study and control group in the total anxiety level post psycho educational intervention..There was a highly statistically significant difference between study and control group regarding total depression level post psycho-educational intervention.
• There was a highly statistically significant difference between study and control group regarding total self-esteem level in post psycho-educational intervention There was a highly statistically significant relation betweenThere was a highly statistically significant relation between anxiety, educational level, income, disease duration, and partner relationship of study group after psycho-educational intervention in study group There was a highly statistically significant relation between depression, marital status, educational level, income, disease duration ,family history, and partner relationship of study group after psycho-educational intervention in study grou There was a highly statistically significant relation between self-esteem and marital status, income and partner relationship after intervention There was a highly statistically significant positive correlation between total anxiety and depression pre and post psycho-educational interventio There was statistically significant negativecorrelation between self- esteem, and anxiety and depression post intervention Conclusion:Based on the result of this study: It was concluded that:The psycho-educational intervention has a positive effect on reducing depression ,anxiety level and improving self esteem among study group than control group with breast cancer patients .There was a negative significant correlation between level of depression ,anxiety and self esteem. There was statistical significant difference between income and parental relationship regarding depression ,anxiety and self esteem .Recommendation: 1. Encourage the patient to ventilate negative feelings. Stay with support groups if she desire. interact with them on topics related to her problems.2. Guidance and counseling unit should be part of the treatment systemso that patients can come there to discuss issues affecting them.3. Psycho educational program for increasing public awareness about depression, anxiety and its multiple consequences and managements and ways of improving self esteem.4. Replication of the study using a larger sample in different settings to generalize the results.
