Abstract

This traumatic experience can reduce the overall functional capacity and QOL of the affected children in comparison to their healthy peers and they seem to have less satisfaction and comfort even in their future’s life.The aim of this work is to to assess the psychological outcomes and health related quality of life (HRQOL) for childhood cancer survivors (CCS) in comparison to normal children. The study was conducted in pediatric oncology unit, Zagazig university hospitals, Sharkia governorate, Egypt.The study included 30 childhood cancer survivors who completed their cancer therapeutic course together with 30 apparent healthy children with matched age and sex were as a control group. Data were collected through: A pre designed structured interview questionnaire. Pediatric cancer quality of life inventory-32 Child behavioral checklist CBCL The SPSS 20.0 statistical package was used for data entry and analysis. The finding of this study was as follows : The mean age of the children the diseased group is (11.6 ± 1.9) compared to (12.1 ± 2.2) in the control group. In patient group (male: female ratio = 1:2) in control group (female: male ratio is 1.8:1.2) . Among cases, the mean age at diagnosis was 7.5 years, mean years since diagnosis was 3.9, mean BMI was 17.0 Kg/m2, mean duration of treatment was 2.3 years, 43% of cases was ALL and 56.7% was other types of cancer. group of cancer survivors had more clinically significant emotional problems than their peers. Statistical significant association was noticed between somatic complaints and sex, residence and socio-economic status of case group. Withdrawn/depressed score is significantly associated with residence and socio-economic status among cancer survivors. group of cancer survivors had more clinically significant Rule breaking behavior problems. Statistical significant association also was noticed between rule breaking behavior scale and aggressive behavior scale with sex of cancer survivors. There was statistical significant association between Social problems and Socio-economic status of cancer survivors. There were statistical significant differences between study groups in total quality of life score with its four domains, physical functioning, emotional functioning, social functioning , and educational functioning scores of quality of life. There was statistical significant association between physical functioning score and socio-economic status and type of diagnosis among cancer survivors. There was statistical significant association between emotional functioning score and sex, residence and socio-economic status among cancer survivors. There was statistical significant association between social functioning score and sex, and socio-economic status among cancer survivors. There was statistical significant association between total quality of life score and sex, and socio-economic status among cancer survivors. There were statistical significant correlation between QOL and age at diagnosis (positive correlation) and years since diagnosis (negative correlation).
