Abstract

Purpose : This clinical study was conducted to evaluate and compare conventional complete dentures versus 3D printed complete dentures fabricated of dimethacrylate-based resins with photo-initiator regarding retention and denture base adaptation. Materials and methods: Six completely edentulous patients were selected for this study from the prosthodontic department, Faculty of Dentistry, Mansoura University. For each patient 2 complete dentures were fabricated. The first dentures were conventionally fabricated while the other complete denture were digitally fabricated through 3D printing of dimethacrylate-based resins with photo-initiator , identical to the scanned previously fabricated conventional dentures. Retention and denture base adaptation for both dentures for each patient were evaluated using digital forcemeter and surface matching software respectively. Evaluation was done at the time of complete denture insertion (T0), after 3 months of denture use (T3) and after 6 months of denture use (T6). Results: Satisfactory and comparable retention values were observed for conventionally fabricated complete denture and 3d printed complete dentures. However, there was no significant difference between both dentures yet there was insignificant increase in retention over time. A statistically insignificant difference was observed between the two dentures regarding mean misfit values of all evaluated regions and for the whole surface area as well. Conclusions : 3D printed complete dentures fabricated of dimethacrylate-based resins could be considered as a promising alternative to conventionally fabricated complete dentures with satisfactory retention and denture base adaptation.
