Abstract

This study aimed at investigating the effectiveness of using Edmodo as a teaching platform to develop writing skills for third-year prep-stage students of governmental language schools and their motivation towards learning English. The researcher followed the quasi-experimental design, so she chose a sample of 44 EFL students at Bardis governmental language school in the directorate of Sohag. The participants divided into experimental and control groups, 22 students for each. The researcher used two instruments. The first instrument was a writing test to measure students’ writing skills the administration. The second instrument was the motivation scale to measure the students’ motivation towards learning English. In addition, the educational platform Edmodo used as a teaching and learning virtual class for explaining the writing lessons included in the course of the third year prep-stage. The findings of the study revealed that there was a statistically significant difference between the mean scores achieved by the experimental group and those of the control group in the post-assessment of students’ writing performance in favor of the experimental group. Likewise, findings indicated there were a statistically significance between the mean scores of the experimental group and control group on the motivation after the experiment in favor of the experimental group. Additionally, implementing the effect size equation, the results revealed that the educational platform Edmodo had a large effect size in favor of the experimental group. The researcher recommended the necessity of using the educational platform Edmodo to develop Students’ writing skills and enhance motivation.
