Abstract This study aimed to evaluate a protocol for diagnosis and treatment of primary congenital glaucoma. Our prospective interventional study was carried out on 60 eyes with PCG of 36 infants and children presented and operated upon in Tanta university hospital in Egypt. The study demonstrated that the most frequent presented age group was between 1-12 months with mean age 11.33 months. There was a slight male predominance 58.8%. Bilaterality of the disease was found in 76.5% of cases. 29.6% of patients had positive history of parental consanguinity and 8.8% had positive family history of PCG. The most common complaint taken from the parents was big eye followed by photophobia, lacrimation then change in the eye color. The main clinical parameters for diagnosis of PCG and evaluation of success rates in our study were IOP, corneal diameter, corneal clarity, cup/disc ratio and axial length of the eye. There was significant improvement in all of them at the end of the follow-up period. Preoperative and postoperative use of anti-glaucoma medications was 73.3% and 36.7%, respectively. The mean of the follow up period was 7.85 (4-13) months. Success rate of the protocol at the last follow up visit was 63.3%, qualified success 36.7%. As regarding primary surgical procedures, trabeculotomy was done for mild cases (35% of total cases) with success rate 95.2%. Combined trabeculotomy-trabeculectomy was done in moderate to severe cases 65% of total cases) with success rate 92.3%. |
