Abstract

A significant area of interest in structural engineering is the investigation of better ways to improve the seismic resistance of structures. To accomplish this, a structure should have tolerable ductility, strength, damping, stiffness, and energy dissipation capacity. These requirements led the researchers to innovate novel techniques for seismic protection of structures, rather than conventional ones in which shear walls and/or cores were commonly utilized to carry lateral loads. One of these novel techniques is the installation of vertical shear links (VSLs) into the structure in order to absorb seismic energy while keeping main structural elements responding within the elastic stage. This thesis focuses on improving the performance of VSLs to enhance the energy dissipation process. VSLs and the buildings equipped with them are numerically investigated in this study via finite element (FE) programs Ansys Workbench and ETABS, respectively. First, a detailed parametric study is initiated on steel and stainless-steel VSLs subjected to cyclic loading.
