Abstract In this study, type IIb and III, extension type supra-condylar fractures of humerus in children aged between 1.5 and 9 years, who were treated by closed reduction with either crossed pinning or lateral pinning. The cases were prospectively studied for functional outcome following the two types of pin placement. The range of age in our study was between 1.5-9 years with a mean age of 5.1 years. Boys (21cases) were more commonly affected (70% of cases) than girls (9cases) 30% of cases. The left side (18cases) was involved more than right side (12cases) by 60% of cases. The mode of trauma was fall to the ground in 19 patients, fall downstairs in 7 patients and fall from height in 4 patients. Type III was present in 90% (27cases) while type II b was present in 10% (3 cases). 15 cases (50% of cases) were treated with lateral pinning and 15 cases (50% of cases) were treated with crossed pinning. The average follow-up period was 3 months (range 2.8-3.2 months). No iatrogenic neurovascular injuries were found during the study. Following lateral divergent pinning, excellent results were found in 93.33% of cases and good results in 6.67% of cases There were 86.67% excellent and 13.33% good results in cases treated with lateral parallel pinning. The difference in the functional and cosmetic outcome between the two groups was not statistically significant. |
