Abstract

Obesity has become a global pandemic. Physical, psychological and economical complications are associated with obesity which affects the quality of life of those individuals. Bariatric surgery has been introduced for individuals with failed conservative and pharmacological trial of weight loos. There are three main types of Bariatric surgery (BS) restrictive (LAGB, LSG), malabsorbtive (BPD), restrictive-malabsorbtive (RYGB,MGB).
A high percentage of morbidly obese patients benefit from bariatric / metabolic procedures in terms of metabolic effect and substantial body mass reduction. On the other hand there are some drawbacks from BS procedures, if the patients did not follow the recommended nutritional guidelines.
The general aim of this study was to observe the effect of Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy (LSG) in comparison to Mini Gastric Bypass ( MGB )on body composition and dietary intake of morbidly obese individuals.
The specific objectives were to compare between the effect of LSG and MGB on weight loss and body composition changes of morbidly obese individuals, to compare between the effect of both surgeries on the dietary intake and lastly to examine the factors (dietary intake – physical exercise –pre surgery comorbidities) that affect lean body mass loss at 3 months postoperatively.
An observational longitudinal study was conducted at private bariatric surgery clinic in Alexandria.in which the effect of LSG and MGB on body composition and dietary intake of 50 morbidly obese individuals was studied. Target population was adult obese patients with BMI>40 kg/m2 or a BMI >35 kg/m2 with the presence of comorbidities.
Preoperatively the patients were interviewed to collect the socio-demographic characteristics of the sample, medical history was taken to determine the presence of any obesity associated comorbid conditions. Also patients were interviewed detailed dietary history and physical activity level was evaluated using a validated international physical activity questionnaire. laboratory results were collect from hospital records to check hemoglobin level,HbA1c,fasting blood glucose, TSH, HOMA IR and 25 hydroxy vitamin D. Anthropometric measures were assessed in terms of height, body weight and BMI also body composition was measured to assess FM and muscle mass.
All patients were followed up at 2 weeks after surgery and at 1 month and 3 months to assess changes in body composition and anthropometric measurements, observing and recording dietary management in the early post-operative period. Assessment of the effect of obesity associated co-morbidities on body composition.
