Abstract Hypertension is a worldwide burden which is accused in the causation of cardiovascular diseases and one of the most important modifiable risk factors for these diseases. About fourth of the adults suffer from hypertension. High blood pressure is a high prevalent disease among the Egyptian population; 29.5% of the Egyptians had hypertension according to Egypt STEPS Survey 2017. Dietary and lifestyle modifications are important behavioral strategies for lowering high blood pressure and reduction of other cardiovascular risks which are a worldwide leading cause of death and account for 30% of all global deaths. The DASH diet is recommended by the American Heart Association for the nonpharmacological management of hypertension for cardiovascular risk reduction. Patients exposed to DASH diet showed improvement in their condition and this improvement is strongly related to the degree of adherence to the diet. So, the objectives of the current study were to identify the dietary habits among hypertensive patients, assess the degree of adherence to DASH guidelines pre and post intervention and to assess the effect of adherence to DASH guidelines on high blood pressure with or without caloric restriction. |
