Abstract III-Evaluation phase: - On the fourth day, one hour after the implementation of the proposed nursing interventions, each geriatric patient in the study group was assessed using tools IV, V, and VI. Moreover, geriatric patients in the control group were assessed individually after four days of receiving routine hospital care using the same tools. - In order to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed respiratory rehabilitation nursing interventions, the researcher compared the differences between first day and fourth day scores of the geriatric patients in both the study group and the control group. 3. The data collection started from the first of January 2021 till the first of April 2021. - Ethical Considerations: an informed written consent was obtained from each study subject after explanation of the study purpose. Privacy of the study subjects and confidentiality of the collected data were maintained. The study subjects were informed that their participation in the study is voluntary and that they can withdraw at any time without any penalty. - The statistical package for social science (SPSS) was utilized for data analysis and tabulation. The level of significance for this study was less than or equal to 0.05. The main results obtained were as follows: The age of geriatric patients in both groups ranged from 60 years to 76 years, with a mean 66.48 ± 5.02 years in the study group, and 67.28 ± 4.23 years in the control group. Males were more prevalent in both the study and control groups. They constituted 72.0 % of the study group, and 80.0% of the control group. More than one half of the subjects in both the study and control groups were married (60.0% and 56.0% respectively). Illiteracy is prevailing in both groups (36.0% and 32.0% respectively). Dyspnea, cough, and wheezes were the main presenting symptoms for all geriatric patients with AECOPD in both the study group and the control group. The duration of AECOPD ranged from 2 to 30 days in both the study and control groups, with a mean duration of 9.60 ± 7.26 days in the study group and 5.76 ± 5.28 days in the control group. All geriatric patients with AECOPD (100.0%) in both groups use mucolytic & expectorant and corticosteroids, while antibiotics were used by the entire study group and 96.0% of the control group. Bronchodilators and oxygen therapy were used by 96.0% of the study group and the entire control group. More than one half (52.0%) of the subjects in the study and control groups reported being exposed to environmental hazards and the rest 48.0% were not. Less than two thirds of geriatric patients with AECOPD (60.0%) either in the study group or in the control group are not complying with medications. After the implementation of the proposed respiratory rehabilitation nursing interventions, a statistically significant improvement was observed in sputum color MCp= 0.024 and amount MCp= <0.001 among the subjects in the study group, when compared to the control group of those who received only usual hospital care. Furthermore, there was no significant change in consistency of sputum among the subjects in both groups, P= 0.508. Statistically significant improvements in the severity of the cough during day-time and night-time P=<0.001, severity of dyspnea MCp=<0.001, and exercise tolerance level. |
