Abstract

Objective : The study aimed to evaluate of total serum bilirubin level (TSB) in the first day of life as a prediction of neonatal hyperbilirubinemia.
Background: hyperbilirubinemia is one of the common problems in neonates so we had a cross section study to evaluate total serum bilirubin in the first day and differentiate between significant and insignificant hyperbilirubinemia .
Methods : 100 newborn with full examination and maternal data collected selected according to the following inclusion and exclusion criteria:
 Inclusion criteria:
1. Full term or near full term
2. Both sexes healthy neonates
3. All lived newborn born cesarean or vaginal delivery.
 Exclusion criteria:
1. Neonatal congenital anomalies.
2. Neonatal syndromes
3. Preterm
All cases had full history (prenatal, natal, postnatal), full examination (Ballard and Apgar score at 1st ,5th minutes….etc), full lab investigation (CBC, CRP, TSB …etc) from first day and followed TSB till fifth day of life.
Results : we found the mean age of mothers was (31.9±4.7)years , 5% of them had positive consanguinity and 8% had chronic diseases.
Regarding mode of delivery 92% of the studied sample had cesarean mode of delivery. Almost half of neonates were females .
