Abstract Interest in intelligence dates back thousands of years, but it wasn’t until psychologist Alfred Binet was commissioned to identify students who needed educational assistance that the first IQ test was born. However, Binet himself did not believe that his psychometric instruments could be used to measure a single, permanent and inborn level of intelligence (2). Cognitive assessment (or intelligence testing) is used to determine an individual’s general thinking and reasoning abilities, also known as intellectual functioning or IQ. Intelligence testing can assess various domains of your child’s cognitive capacity. To obtain an accurate profile of an individual’s overall intellectual functioning or IQ level. To identify an individual’s cognitive strengths and weaknesses To assist in exploring an individual’s learning difficulties To assist in developing learning strategies and recommendations To assist in the examination of: Intellectual giftedness Specific learning disabilities Intellectual disability Autism Spectrum Disorder Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (4). Summary 70 Human figure drawing tests are good screening devices because of their ease in administration, scoring efficiency and wide acceptance by children of all ages (8). The Draw a Person is easily administered and functions as a rapport builder for examiners (9). The purpose of the Good enough-Harris Draw a Person Test is to provide a simple, time-saving device for measuring intellectual maturity (Reisman & Yamokoski, 1973). This study aimed to test value of Draw a person test in assessing cognitive functions in comparison to standard IQ test ”Stanford Binet test”. This study includes 56 children whose ages ranged from 4 to 12 years, were involved among those attending to pediatric psychology unit in Bab El-Shareya University Hospital in Cairo Governorate. Each child was subjected to draw a person test and Stanford Binet test ”short battery”. In this study, as regard to IQ results, revealed that Draw a Person test gave comparable results to standard IQ test (Stanford-Binet test) in assessing the intelligence. This study showing that: The Draw aperson test had high sensitivity (100%) and high specifity (81%) and Overall Test Accuracy (p<0.001) 91.07% with high Positive Predictive (85.29%) to Stanford Binet test among children with low grade scale. The Draw aperson test had high specifity (100%) and Overall Test Accuracy (p<0.001) 94.60% with high Positive Summary 71 Predictive (100.00%) Value to Stanford Binet test among children with superior grade scale. So Draw Person test showed substantial agreement with Stanford Binet test in assessing intelligence. The agreement of Draw Person Test and Stanford Binet Test extended to all age groups, all grades, and also with or without school difficult human figure drawings remain the preferred method of assessment, as it offers a feasible easy time saving alternative method for children who cannot tolerate a standard IQ test so children accepted to Draw Person Test although some need encouragement but none refused. So from this study recommend that The study can be repeated on illiterate school age children to verify its usefulness in this age group of children.so we can use DAP as a screening device for intelligence as a part of national program in our country as it can predict I.Q level in risky children. Actions are needed to alert those concerned with teaching pediatrics or health care givers about usefulness of Draw a person test and to be included in pediatric curricula and practical teaching of under and postgraduates as The Draw a Person is easily administered and functions as a rapport builder for examiners. |
