Abstract

The nervous system is the communication and information-storage system of the body. In addition to coordinating functions that are commonly associated with the brain, such as thinking, the nervous system plays a major role in physiologic regulation. Virtually all physiologic functions are influenced or controlled by the nervous system (Brodal, 2004). In vertebrates, it consists of two main parts (Fig. 1), the central nervous system (CNS) and the peripheral nervous system (PNS). The CNS consists of the brain and spinal cord. The PNS consists mainly of nerves, which are enclosed bundles of the long fibers or axons, which connect the CNS to every other part of the body. The nervous system also integrates the functions of the various organ systems (Hannula, 2003).Neurologic dysfunction has a major impact that goes beyond the nervous system itself. Conversely, abnormal functioning in other systems can modify neurologic functioning (Hannula, 2003). CNS disease is a broad category of conditions in which the brain does not function as it should, limiting health and the ability to function. Brain diseases can result directly from intrinsic dysfunction of the brain or from complex interactions between the brain and the physical environment (Hyman et al., 2006).
