Abstract The present thesis aimed to investigate the phytoplankton diversity in the northeastern section of Manzala Lake and Ashtoum El-Gamil protectorate in addition to the bioaccumulation capacity of the heavy metals. Abnormal changes of physico-chemical properties and quality of Lake Manzala water directly affect the phytoplankton diversity, abundance and standing algal crop variation. Lake Manzala is highly eutrophic with nutrients and heavy metals having access to people via the food chain beginning from phytoplankton. Lake Manzala sustained abnormally heavy phytoplankton blooms, in addition to the dominance of Bacillariophyta altogether with Chlorophyta, and Cyanophyta, The bioaccumulation capacity of tested Cyanophyta species for heavy metals varied according to type of Cyanophyta species and type of heavy metals. The obtained results of the present work will be useful for optimal management of Manzala Lake. |
