Abstract

Summary and conclusions chronic rhinosinusitis is defined as the presence of two or more symptoms one of which should be either nasal blockage/ obstruction/ congestion or nasal discharge (anterior/posterior nasal drip) with/without facial pain/pressure and with/without reduction or loss of smell for 12 weeks or more. The relation between anatomical variations and sinusitis is not clear till now. Some studies showed statistically significant association between common anatomical variations and the presence of sinusitis while in other studies no statistically significant relationship. Our study included 140 cases which were divided into two groups: The first group was the case group including patients who had chronic rhinosinusitis as detected by CT of paranasal sinuses (70 patients). The second group was control group including patients who underwent paranasal CT scan and no chronic rhinosinusitis was detected (70 patients) to detect the relation between the following anatomical variations and chronic rhinosinusitis: 1. Nasal septal deviation. 2. Concha bullosa. 3. Agger nasi cells. 4. Infraorbital ethmoidal (Haller) cells. 5. Sphenoethmoidal (Onodi) cells. 6. Frontal recess cells. The results were that there is no significant relation between the studied anatomical variations and chronic rhinosinusitis except for Septal deviation, Haller cells, Supra agger frontal cell and Supra bulla frontal cell.
