Abstract

In the Egyptian Mediterranean coasts, there are more than 70 marine fish species which constitute the landed catch. Among these, there are dominant families which comprise about 50% of the landed catch; these families are Clupeidae, Crustacea and Sparidae with a percent of 21.9%, 17.2% and 10.4% respectively (GAFRD, 2014). Sardine spp. and shrimp spp. are considered as the most dominant species in the landed catch from the Egyptian Mediterranean coast. The rest comprises various marine species but of low abundance. Beside these, there are some species which constitute less than 5% of the landed catch, while other species still fewer in number, constituting what is known as the bycatch. These include fishes of family Scorpaenidae, Scombridae and Trichiuridae. The biological information about these species is limited, despite that they represent an important component in the fisheries in some other countries, other seas and Oceans.
