Abstract

Background:Visceral adipose tissue-derived serine protease inhibitor (vaspin) is a relatively novel adipocytokine with protective effects on metabolic diseases and exerts anti-inflammatory and anti-migratory roles through anti-oxidative effects in vascular smooth muscle cells in peripheral vascular wall so it can prevent the development of hypertension.
Previous studies have demonstrated that vaspin exerts a protective effect on arteries undergoing atherosclerosis in vitro andexerts protective effects on heart disease that low vaspin concentrations correlate with coronary artery disease (CAD) severity and unstable angina pectoris.
Objectives: This study aims to show the role of serum Vaspin level on Hypertensive patients as regard severity and complications.
Patients and Methods:The study conducted on 87 patients , 66 hypertensive patients and 21 healthy volunteers as control group. The subjects in patients group were age and sex matched and they included 35 female and 31 male divided into three groups, group 1 for hypertensive patients , group 2 for hypertensive complicated patients and group 3 for healthy individuals .Vaspin level assay by ELISA using NOVA Vaspin ELIZA Kit.
Results:On comparing the 3 studied groups , There was a negative correlation between serum vaspin level and hypertension . As shown with the results, the serum vaspin levels in group 1 (mean value 13.05 ng/ml) less than vaspin levels in group 3 (mean value 50.14 ng/ml), and serum vaspin levels continue to decrease further as hypertension progress and development of complications as shown in group 2 (mean value 5.57 ng/ml ). Comparing the results of the three studied groups using one way ANOVA the P value was 0.000* which was statistically significant.
Conclusion: Vaspin levels are high in healthy individuals, start to decrease in hypertensive patients and drive more decline as hypertension progress to the lowest levels in complicated hypertensive patients . This similar to what Zing lin et al found that low vaspin concentration correlate with coronary artery disease (CAD) severity , Zhang et al also demonstrated that low vaspin concentrations are correlated with the severity of CAD. Also vaspin level decreases with age but with no differences between males and females.
