Abstract

Tooth decay is one of the most prevalent chronic diseases of people world wide, Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) is one of the most widely used plants in the world in food recipes and is relatively inexpensive. It is also considered one of the strongest herbs for medicinal uses. Humans have been adding it to tea since ancient times to treat colds and colds and to feel warm. The compounds in Glycyrrhiza glabra extract are responsible for this effectiveness, and because of it, scientists have also known it as a food that resists bacteria and infections. This study was conducted to testing the effect of different concentrations of Glycyrrhiza glabra plant extract on the growth of bacteria (Streptococcus mutans and sobrinus) that causing tooth decay in diabetics patients in different age. The Glycyrrhiza glabra plant extract was prepared by the aqueous method by adding 1000 mg of licorice root in water at a temperature ranging between (10-20) degrees Celsius, as well as preparing five different concentrations of Glycyrrhiza glabra extract in the laboratory, which is (10%, 20%, 30%,40%,50%) and the antibiotic (Vancomycin10%) was used) as a positive mist group and also Non-ionic water as a group of negative control. Stimulated saliva was collected from two hundred patients were involved in the investigation. Their ages ranged between (4- 60) years old of both genders, bacteria were isolated, purified, diagnosed, morphological conduction, and biochemical tests. The patient divided into two main groups. 50 patient’s non diabetic, suffering from tooth decay (control). The other 150 patient, suffering from diabetic and tooth decay. The results of this study revealed the sensitivity of bacteria ( Streptococcus mutans and sobrinus) to the extract of the Glycyrrhiza glabra plant. Gycyrrhiza glabra extract is also effective in inhibiting the growth of these bacteria that cause tooth decay, but the sensitivity of these bacteria is greater in higher concentrations of Glycyrrhiza glabra. As well as the results of this study showed in patients suffering from diabetes you need a higher concentration of Glycyrrhiza glabra to inhibit bacterial growth compared to patients without diabetes. There were no significant differences in the sensitivity of the bacteria to licorice at different ages. The study showed that a 50% concentration of Glycyrrhiza glabra extract was the best concentration for inhibiting bacterial growth. Conclusion showed that (Glycyrrhiza glabra) extract has a positive effect when using as inhibit bacteria growth Streptococcus mutans and sobrinus that causes tooth decay. As well as the best results when used 50% Glycyrrhiza glabra concentration on Streptococcus sobrinus and mutans for patient suffering and non suffering diabetic disease.
