Abstract 9-Summary Periodontitis, a relevant cause of tooth loss in adults it is a chronic inflammatory disease that is characterized by localized bone resorption the pathogenesis of periodontitis involves the presence of a bacterial plaque that may initiate a local inflammatory reaction in predisposed hosts. There is a pressing demand to discover novel strategies. There is an evidence that scaling and root planning with hand instruments or ultrasonic therapy is effective in treating periodontitis but it doesn’t remove bacterial toxins or bacterial deposits completely. So, a lot of researchers have proposed using of several types of laser as a more efficient method of root planning. The present study was designed to determine the antimicrobial effect after using diode laser (980 nm) as adjunctive therapy to scaling .and root planning in the treatment of induced periodontitis in rats One hundred and twenty male albino rats were used. Rats were induced to have periodontitis group I (infection group): 20 rats. group II (positive control group): 50 rats got SRP alone (positive control group). group III (test group): 50 rats got SRP and subjected to Irradiation with 1watt Diode Laser (980 nm) using optical fiber, positioned parallel to the long axis of the tooth in the induced periodontal pocket. 126 Microbiological analysis and histological assessment were done prior to the start of the treatment at baseline, day 7 and 14. The results showed that SRP assisted by diode laser therapies exhibits better results than SRP alone, all sites treated with SRP and diode laser showed more statistically significant improvement in all clinical parameters ,all sites treated with SRP and diode laser showed reducing total bacterial count than SRP alone ,microbial counting reducing colony forming units, as well as histopathological findings regarding significant reduction in the inflammatory cell count and bone showing significant regenerations. . Results of the present study revealed that treatment with diode laser as adjunctive to SRP may improve periodontal, microbiological indices and histological findings compared to SRP alon |
