Abstract

Nano scale materials can be specified as those with distinguished length scale in the nanometric range and the term nano is derived from the Greek word “nanos”. Thus, the science of nanostructures is often defined as treating with objects on a size scale of 1–100 nm. Within this scale, the features of matter are sufficiently different from individual atoms or molecules and from bulk materials. The study of these materials has been recently defined as the “Nanoscience”. Even more common than nanoscience has become the term Nanotechnology, which relates to the ability to build functional devices based on the controlled assembly of nanoscale objects, for specific technological applications. The importance of both nanoscience and nanotechnology has been proved by a number of national and international initiatives to reinforce their study. Funding agencies in the USA, Europe, Australia and Japan are spending a significant part of their funds for the development of this relatively new area of study. Likewise, the number of teams working in nanoscience or nanotechnology has drastically risen during the past two decades, which also means that the amount of information obtainable is becoming larger and larger [1].
