Abstract

The ligands (E)-2-(1-(2-oxo-2H-chromen-3-yl)ethylidene)hydrazinecarboxamide, HL1 and (E)-2-(1-(2-oxo-2H-chromen-3-yl)ethylidene)hydrazinecarbothioamide, HL2 and their Zn(II), Cu(II), Ag(I) and Au(III) complexes, have been synthesized and characterized by different physicochemical methods. The molar conductance values reveal that [Au (HL2)2(H2O)2].Cl3 complex is electrolytic in nature while the other prepared complexes are non-electrolytic in nature. Spectroscopic data suggest that both ligands behave as neutral bidentate ligand, coordinating to the metal ions via azomethine nitrogen and carbonyl oxygen or thione sulphur. The HL1 forms (1:1) (metal: ligand) complexes while HL2 forms (1:2) stoichiometry, the synthesized complexes exhibit different geometrical arrangements. The mechanism of decomposition of the prepared compounds was studied using different thermal analyses techniques (TGA, DTG and DTA) and the thermodynamic parameters ΔE*, ΔH* and ΔS*, are calculated using Horowitz–Metzger methods. The ligands and their complexes are screened against multi-resistant Gram positive bacteria (Staphylococcus spp and Streptococcus spp.), Gram negative bacteria Pseudomonas spp, Salmonella spp., Escherichia coli, Proteus spp. and Klebsiella spp.)and the fungus, Candida albicans and subjected to cytotoxic activities against human liver cancer cells HepG2. Both ligands exhibited high potency as antibacterial agents, while metal complexes increased the anticancer activity to over 40% compared to the ligands.
