Abstract Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is one of the major macrovascularcomplications of type II diabetes which is associated with cardiovascularmortality and a high disability rate following the amputation of an extremity. Itaffects three to four times in diabetic individuals than non-diabetic (Shukla et al., 2018 ; Akalu & Birhan, 2020) Moreover, several researches have proven that Buerger Allen exercise is an effective non pharmacological method to improve peripheral circulation of lower extremity among patients with type II diabetes (Kumar, 2020)The aim of this study was to determine the effect of selected range of motion exercise on peripheral circulation among patients with type II diabetes mellitus. Setting: The study was carried out at Outpatient Diabetic Clinic of Shebin El- Kom Teaching hospitals. Subjects: A consecutive sample of 100 patients of both sexes was randomly selected and assigned alternatively into two equal groups, 50 patients for each group. Study group (I): they were taught to perform Buerger Allen exercise along with routine hospital care. Control group (Π): exposed only to routine hospital care. Tools of the study: four tools were utilized for data collection Instrument I: - Structure interview questionnaire. Instrument I1:- Physiological instrument. Instrument (III):- The ankle-brachial pressure index (ABPI). Instrument IV: - Observational checklist. The main findings of the present study were There were highly significantly improvements in peripheral circulation symptoms four weeks post exercise implementation among study group (I) than control group (II). There were highly significantly improvements in the total scores of ABI in subjects of study group (I) than control group (II). There were highly significantly improvements in the total scores regarding performance of Buerger Allen exercise in study group (I) than control group (II). Conclusion Mean total ABI scores were improved among type II diabetic patients who practiced Buerger Allen exercise (study group) than those who exposed only to the routine hospital care (control group). Recommendations Supervised health education should be carried out for all type II diabetic patients about Buerger Allen exercise to improve their peripheral circulation and a colored illustrative booklet about disease, PAD and Buerger Allen technique should be available and distributed to all patients with type II Diabetes Mellitus. 81 |
