Abstract

This dissertation investigates the notion of Nida’s dynamic equivalence using the Return of the Spirit by Tawfiq Al-Hakim as the case study. The choice of this novel is based on the rich cultural nature of the novel which gives researcher the space to prove that although there is no one fixed approach must be followed in translation; dynamic equivalence is the solution in many cases especially in literary translation with deep cultural dimension as the selected novel. Al- Hakim asserts that the Return of the Spirit “is not so much a record of a historical period as a document about feeling, the feeling of a young man in the middle of a fateful stage for his country” (al-Hakim, Prison, 113), it is “intended to express the feelings of a youth caught up in an important phase of his country’s history” (Starkey, 26). The novel reflects the Egyptian life at its time full of cultural references, social aspects, historical and political significant issues that help foreign readers to see the Egyptian society and the Arabic readers to enjoy these details.
