Introduction:
Autism is one of the categories of special education that has attracted the interest of researchers and psychologists, and it is still a subject of controversy in terms of its diagnosis, causes and methods of treatment, It is an unpredictable disorder, which greatly affects the family, and it reflects many psychological pressures on parents, and leads to difficulty in meeting the needs associated with raising an autistic child.
The researcher finds the importance of counseling mothers of autistic children, this is because the mother is the closest to her child, the one who deals with him and comes into contact with him, and is largely responsible for meeting his daily needs, thus, she is in urgent need of training on the proper handling of her child and how to accept him, whereas it is one of the things agreed upon is that the first basis for mental health is derived from the strong relationship between mother and child, as the child gets from his mother’s care for him to feel that he is desirable.
Study Problem:
Through the researcher’s observation for a number of mothers of autistic children in the school at which she works, and its noticing the situation close to her who has two autistic children, she noticed the extent of distress and feeling of pressure that mothers of children with autism suffer while talking with them about living with their children, which also revealed their attachment to some their irrational beliefs and ideas, which may exacerbate the stress they suffer from, thus, the first aspect of the problem of the current study becomes clear which is represented in the sense of it and the urgent need to study it.
The study problem can be identified in the following question: What is the effectiveness of a selective counseling program in improving the level of parental acceptance among mothers of autistic children and its impact on mitigation the severity of some behavioral problems of them?, this main question is divided into a group of questions:
1- To what extent the effectiveness of a selective counseling program in improving the level of parental acceptance among mothers of autistic children?
2- What is the continuity of effectiveness of a selective counseling program in improving the level of parental acceptance of mothers of autistic children during the follow-up period?
3- What is the effect of a selective counseling program to improve the level of acceptance of mothers of autistic children in reducing the severity of some behavioral problems (stubbornness, anxiety, and emotional disturbance) of them?
4-What is the continuity of effectiveness of a selective counseling program in improving the level of parental acceptance of mothers of autistic children in reducing the severity of some behavioral problems (stubbornness, anxiety, and emotional disturbance) of them? during the follow-up period?
Study Objectives:
The current Study aimed to identify the following:
1- The effectiveness of a selective counseling program in improving the level of parental acceptance among mothers of autistic children.
2-The extent of the continuity of the effectiveness of a selective counseling program in improving acceptance of mothers of autistic children in mitigation the severity of some behavioral problems (stubbornness, anxiety, and emotional disturbance) of their own children during the follow-up period.
3- The extent of the continuity of effectiveness of a selective counseling program in improving the level of parental acceptance of mothers of autistic children during the follow-up period.
4- The effect of the effectiveness of a selective counseling program in improving acceptance of mothers in alleviating the severity of some behavioral problems (stubbornness, anxiety, and emotional disturbance) of their own children.
Study importance:
The importance of the syudy is as follows:
1- The importance of the topic of current study as it deals with the method of parental acceptance, which is one of the methods used by parents in the process of socialization.
2- This study sheds light on an important group that each one needs to come together in order to help it, given the continuous increase in the number of autistic children.
3- Providing a counseling program that deals with the intervention of mothers of autistic children and not the children themselves.
4- Shedding light on the need to guide mothers of autistic children.
5- Mitigation some behavioral problems for autistic children.
6- The current study may be useful in enriching theoretical frameworks related to the importance of selective counseling for people with special needs.
7- This study may be useful in coming up with recommendations that are restricted in preparing counseling and orientation programs for families of autistic children.
Study Results:
The study results were the following:
1- There were statistically significant differences between the mean rank scores of the study sample members on the parental acceptance scale used in the current study in the pre and post measurements in favor of the post measurement.
2- There were no statistically significant differences between the mean rank scores of the study sample members on the parental acceptance scale used in the current study in the post and follow-up measurements.
3- There were statistically significant differences between the mean rank scores of the study sample members on the behavioral problems scale used in the current study in the pre and post measurements in favor of the post measurement.
4- There were no statistically significant differences between the mean rank scores of the study sample members on the behavioral problems scale used in the current study in the post and follow-up measurements.
