Abstract

Hemothorax is one of the most prevalent injuries caused by
thoracic traumas. Early detection and treatment of this injury is of
utmost importance in prognosis of the patient, but there are still
controversial debates on the diagnostic value of imaging techniques in
detection of hemothorax. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate
accuracy of chest ultrasonography for emergency diagnosis of
haemothorax in adult patients with thoracic trauma versus chest x-ray.
This study included 100 patients presented to Emergency
Department of Menoufia University Hospitals in a trauma event.
All patients were subjected to full history taking, assessed and
managed through (ATLS) protocol including:
1. Primary survey.
2. Secondary survey.
3. Investigations.
In case of haemothorax, ultrasound findings were compared
against the results of the supine chest radiograph, as reported by the
trauma team or the presence of blood drained from the chest when an
intercostal drain was placed.
The results of this study within the limitations of this study shown
that:
- The majority of our patients were males 72 (72%) with and
mean age (30.4±9.1).
- The most common cause of injury was road traffic accident
(RTA) (89%).
