Abstract

Acne vulgaris is a chronic inflammatory disease of the pilosebaceous unit. Acne develops as a result of an interplay of the following factors: follicular epidermal hyperproliferation with hyperkeratosis, excess sebum production, the presence and the activity of the commensal bacteria Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) and inflammation.
Resistin, originally described as an adipocyte-specific hormone, has been suggested to be an important link between obesity and insulin resistance.
Resistin acts mainly as pro-inflammatory mediator. Interleukins and microbial antigens can enhance the activity of the resistin gene in basal sebocytes. Resistin has an important role in the pathogenesis of AV as in the other inflammatory skin diseases. Factors affecting its production may possibly influence the degree of inflammatory response and hence may account for the clinical severity of AV due to the fact that the functional genetic polymorphisms in the promoter and intron regions of cytokines and adipocytokine genes can affect transcriptional activity defining the level of proteins. A number of studies have demonstrated that RETN (-420) gene polymorphism is linked with AV.
The aim of the current study was to detect the association between RETN gene (rs1862513) polymorphism and if it has any relationship with acne vulgaris in Egyptian patients and whether it has an association with disease severity or not.
This case control study was conducted on 40 patients with acne vulgaris (25 females and 15 males), beside 40 age and sex matche
