Abstract The lips are of great functional and cosmetic importance for the perception of facial beauty. Cancer resection causes the majority of lip defects; however, trauma and burns are also common causes of lip defects that require reconstruction. Lip reconstruction is challenging even for an experienced surgeon because the lips play a major esthetic and functional role in the lower third of the face. Evaluation of the patients in need of lip reconstruction requires a clear understanding of the lip anatomy. The aims of reconstruction should be to maintain maximum oral aperture, maintain mobility, maintain sensation, and maximize cosmesis. The first mention of a labial repair was made in India back in 1000 BC. Most modern techniques were developed during the nineteenth century and have continually evolved since that time. Facial artery musculomucosal (FAMM) flap, which is taken from the lateral cheek as a composite flap, was described in 1992 and was used to reconstruct a variety of structures, including the palate, nasal lining, maxillary antrum, tonsillar fossa, and the floor of the mouth. FAMM flap offers us reliable and versatile solution for lip and vermilion reconstruction. It has many features that make it a reasonable compromise for this purpose such as its color and texture |
