Abstract

Generally , a large number of heritage buildings suffer from deterioration becau se of the absence of maintenance , while other building s are replaced by new high-rises. Adaptive reuse is one of the main strategies for the prese1vation of architectural heritage building s in modern practices and theories of conse1vation. Most of the procedures taken during the conse1vation process do not include any measures that make the building more resilient and compatible with the environment. Sometimes, these procedures lead to failure or deficiency in achieving the objectives of the conservation and sustainability strategy during the time of operation. Also, some of the factors that lead to the deterioration of heritage building s are the absence of direct guidelines for the rehabilitation and conservation of heritage buildings, the absence of an evaluation tool to assess the building that have been adaptively reused, as well as the absence of a disaster management plan to save heritage buildings during hazards caused by the vulnerabilitie s in the built environment. Worldwide , most of the heritage buildings are currently evaluated according to different rating systems whether in the categmy of existing buildings or new constmction. Some rating systems have a set of minimum requirements for heritage building s, while others do not have any requirements related to saving the authenticity of the heritage building s. This can lead to the loss of the value of these buildings in the process of conve1ting them into a sustainable one. This thesis discusses the impmtance of a comprehen sive assessment of adaptive reuse heritage buildings and the need to develop cunent assessment tools. The main purpose of the cunent study is to identify the impact of the conse1vation process with relation to resiliency of heritage building s, as well as, generating a rating system for the assessment of the sustainability and resiliency of the adaptive reuse heritage buildings. A comparative analysis approach is used to compare between LEED platinum ce1tified buildings. The research produces a resilient sustainable heritage rating system under the LEED Rating system. It aims to keep and maintain building s, applying sustainable practices, and to consider conserving the heritage value of these buildings. The research highlights, through investigation, the idea of sustainable heritage buildings, and producing a specific rating system that can assess green heritage buildings. This new rating system was applied to evaluate two buildings inside Egypt from two different eras, Sarna’ Khana and the Alexandria National Museum.
