Abstract

This chapter presented the parametric study conducted on a total of eighty-four specimens to investigate the strength and behaviour of CFS built-up laced members under static axial compression loading. The verified finite element models, presented in Chapter 5 of this thesis, were used. Three different cold-formed plain channel section sizes were involved in the parametric study. The investigated parameters included different (S/h) ratios, different member effective lengths, and different inclination angles between lacing bars and the longitudinal axis of the member to provide a constant local buckling length (Lz) for the analysed members in each channel size category. The members’ compressive strengths predicted numerically were compared against the unfactored design compressive strengths calculated using the North American Specification (AISI-S100-16), Australian/New Zealand Standard (AS/NZS-4600:2018), and European Standard-(EN-1993-1-3:2006-(E)). Regardless the difficulties and the complications of calculations, the comparison showed that the design codes were generally accurate for the built-up CFS laced members. To avoid the difficulties and the complications of the effective width method calculations, a new simplified Direct Strength Method design approach was proposed. The proposed design approach excellently determined the compressive strengths of the built-up CFS laced members.
