Abstract

Summary
The artefacts from Z. Saad collection at the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization include a variety of cosmetic tools; such as cosmetic spoons and palettes, kohl sticks and pots, along with hair combs and pins. Another wide range of jewellery were identified in Saad collection. The most frequent jewellery in the collection were necklaces, collars, bracelets and amulets.
Purpose: The main purpose of this dissertation is to publish for the first time a selection of the cosmetic tools and jewellery that came out from the excavations of Z. Saad in Helwan cemetery. The main objective of the research is to illustrate and explore the patterns of the personal adornment of the Early Dynastic Egyptian commoners that were buried in the cemetery of Helwan. In addition, the research aims at determining the religious symbolism of the elements that used to adorn the cosmetic tools and the jewellery of the collection.
The thesis is not dealing with the symbolism of colors or stones in ancient Egypt, as they were previously covered through several references or studies.1
