Abstract

Childbirth is a physiological event that primigravida women
may experience as a crisis; in terms of psychological fear and anxieties.
The psychological and emotional changes experienced during
pregnancy are related to an increase in the hormonal levels in utero.
Childbirth fear is a negative perception starting in the antenatal period
and may be experienced during birth and postpartum period leading to
development of obstetric complications.
Pregnancy is one of the most vital events in women’s life that
deserves women to do more effort in order to save their health and to
bring a healthy baby into this world (5). Pregnancy may be associated
with many health problems either physical such as, hyperemesis
gravidarum, hypertension, and anemia or psychological such as, fear,
anxiety, and depression. Pregnancy usually lasts about 40 weeks, or just
over 9 months, as measured from the first day of last menstrual period
to delivery and consists of three parts called trimesters.
Primigravidas (PG) are women who conceive for the first time.
They are a high risk group, because of the unexpected events in their
pregnancy. The lived experience of childbirth does not exist among
primigravidas. Yet some of them may end their pregnancy due to
strong fear of experiencing vaginal birth. Others who continue
pregnancy may request caesarean section due to fear of the unknown,
fear of loss of control, fear of childbirth pain and fear of inability to
cope with delivery process.
