Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a frequent, serious, metabolic disorder with many complications that are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality.
In Egypt, diabetes affects 15.56 % of adults in Egypt between the ages of 20 and 79, with 86,478 people dying each year as a result of the disease. This high number, along with inadequate healthcare resources increases the importance of further improving the facilities for prevention of diabetes and its complications as well as early detection and treatment.
Diabetic foot infection is a condition that threatens a limb, because of certain anatomical peculiarities, the deep infection consequences in a diabetic foot are much worse than elsewhere.
The foot has multiple compartments, that are inter-connected allowing the infection to spread from one to the next and lack of pain sensation encourages the patient to ambulate, allowing the infection to spread much faster. Soft tissues of the foot such as plantar aponeurosis, muscle sheaths, tendons and fascia, cannot resist infection. A combination of hyperglycemia, ischemia and neuropathy aggravates the condition by a reduction in the the defense mechanism.
Diabetic foot ulcer which considered as one of the chronic complications in diabetic patients, if not effectively avoided and controlled, they could end up with disabilities and death.
DFU has been observed to affect 10%–15% of diabetics. It happens as a result of a number of risk factors, including long-term diabetes, impaired metabolic function, advanced age, peripheral vasculopathy, foot deformities and poor knowledge.
Prevention of foot injuries and proper foot care is one of the important aspects of managing a diabetic foot ulcer. This necessitates patient education, understanding of proper foot ulcer treatment and knowledge of how to treat foot ulcers..
It has been suggested that a good knowledge of appropriate foot care positively influences the patient, and causes a reduction in his/her risk of foot ulceration and amputation if he/she is at high-risk
