Abstract

Providing comprehensive nursing care is a multifaceted process that requires a team of nursing members to engage in complex roles that involve assessing, planning, intervening, evaluating, organizing, thinking critically, prioritizing, delegating, advocating, and teaching.Nurses‟ job performance contributes to improve several aspects in nurses such as behavior, attitudes and traits which help to increase the productivity of an organization through fulfilling the expectations, regulations of an organization and needs of individual formal role
when he is a member of the organization (Kakkar, Dash, Vohra, & Saha, 2020).
Teamwork in healthcare has been broadly implemented and is believed to promote
good outcomes for patients and the organization alike. Effective teamwork is thought to be a
better way to care for complex patients’ needs and to improve patients‟ outcomes overall.
Thus, teamwork oriented culture has been suggested as a promising approach in improving
healthcare processes and nursing performance (Deraz, 2019).
This study aimed to assess nurses‟ perception about teamwork and its effect on their
job performance through answering the following questions; What is the level of staff nurses‟
perception about teamwork? , What is the level of staff nurses‟ job performance? , What is
the relation between staff nurses‟ perception about teamwork and their job performance?
The study was conducted at Menoufia University Hospital at Shebin-ELkom 13 units
and departments. A descriptive correlational research design was used to conduct this study.
A convenience sampling technique was used, sample consisted of 292 male and female
nurses who accepted to participate in the study and had at least 2 years of experience.
Two instruments were used to collect the data of this study; the first instrument was
Teamwork Perceptions Questionnaire (TPQ) that used to assess the staff nurses perceptions
about teamwork, that consists of two parts: Part one: The personal characteristics of the study
participants. Part two: consists of 35 items representing the five theoretical dimensions of
- 98 -
teamwork. The first subpart is about team structure, is composed of 7 items, The second
subpart is about leadership, includes 7 items, The third subpart is about communication,
consists of 7items, The fourth subpart is about mutual support, composed of 7 items, and the
fifth item is situational monitoring, composed of 7 items.
The Second instrument was observational checklist for measuring job performance.
It included 54 items divided into eight dimensions; assessment (6items) , nursing diagnosis(
4 items) ,plan (4 items) ,implementation (9 items), health education (7items), evaluation
(5items), interpersonal relationship/ communication (11items)and documentation (8items).
Validity of study instruments:
A bilingual group of five experts was selected to test the content
and face validity of the instrument from nursing administration department (3 experts from
Menoufia University and 2 experts from Tanta University).
Reliability of the instruments:
Reliability of the two instruments tested by Cronbach’s Alph test, reliability of
teamwork questionnaire was 0.92 while the reliability of job performance was (0.78).
Results of the current study could be summarized as follow:
 More than two-thirds of staff nurses (70.9%) aged from 20 to less than 35 years old, the
majority of them were females (76.0%), and more than half of them (52.1%) had
associated nursing degree. The majority of them(77.4%) were married, and more than
one- third of them (33.9%) had years of experience less than 5 years and more than ten
years.
 The total mean score of nurses‟ perceptions towards teamwork was (90.1±12.73), the
first ranking with the highest mean score of teamwork was related to team structure
dimension (18.7±2.31) with a mean percentage of (89%), while the last ranking with the
lowest mean score was related to leadership (17.1±3.18) with a mean percentage of
- 99 -
(81.4%). Also, the majority of studied nurses had a high perception level about teamwork
(87%), and (13%) of studied nurses had a moderate perception level.
 The total mean score of staff nurses‟ job performance level was (98.514.8). The first
ranking with the highest mean score was related to nursing diagnosis dimension
(6.752.49) with a mean percent of (84.3%), while the last ranking with the lowest mean
score was related to assessment dimension (16.92.93) with mean percent of (76.8).
additionally, about two thirds of studied nurses (65.8%) had a high level of performance,
almost one-third of studied nurses (34.2%) had a moderate level of performance.
 Finally, there was a highly positive statistically significant correlation between teamwork
perception and job performance among studied nurses.
Recommendations
Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations are proposed:
I- At hospital level:
1. Healthcare organizations should develop a culture of teamwork and collaboration
among nurses by integrating these two concepts into its core values and develop it
through strategic management.
2. The hospital should provide effective and continuous training programs for nursing
staff based on needs assessment to develop their knowledge and skills and
consequently their teamwork and performance.
3. Nursing Managers should have effective leadership skills and be a role model to
support and coordinate nurses to lead teams effectively.
4. Nurse Managers should work on strengthening open communication by conducting
regular meetings with their nurses, to improve their performance.

II-At educational level:
1. Nursing educational institutions should collaborate with in-service training
department in healthcare organization to develop effective training programs on
concepts of collaboration and teamwork.
2. Reinforce the team spirit and lifelong learning among nursing students to promote
teamwork and professionalism after graduation.
III-At research level:
Further researches are required to:
1. The study could be replicated with larger samples, perhaps incorporating additional
health care sectors.
2. Studying effect of application of teamwork strategy on patient outcomes.
3. Further studies are recommended to be conducted on other nursing categories about
their perception toward obstacles of teamwork and how to develop nurse performance.
