Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is one of the largest global emerging health issues of the 21St century. It is expected that the rapidly developing countries will harbor the largest number of diabetics. China and India occupy the first two places also Egypt and Pakistan from the MENA region come in 8th and the 10th places respectively. These major expectations are attributable to urbanization, physical inactivity, unhealthy diet, obesity, long life expectancy and polypharmacy. Frequent screening programs and national campaigns are also uncovering the large proportion of undiagnosed cases.
The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of diagnosed and undiagnosed diabetes mellitus and impaired fasting glucose (IFG) in cohort of adult Egyptian population living at Elqobaniyah village, Almontazah, Alexandria Governorate during the period from January to March 2019.
This study included 1000 adult subjects selected at random by taking roughly one house every 10 houses of the whole village. The subjects of the study will cover the various age groups who are ≥20 years of age regardless of he or she had diabetes. They were asked for information on age, sex, family history of diabetes, hypertension, previous history of diabetes and history of GDM for women. The blood pressure was measured and the BMI was calculated for all participants.
Fasting plasma glucose (FPG) samples were taken after overnight fasting for at least 8 hours up to 12 hours. The cut-off points for diagnosis of diabetes mellitus and impaired fasting glucose (prediabetes) were taken according to ADA recommendations in 2019.
from the results of the present study, we can conclude the followings:
1) The overall prevalence of diabetes mellitus was found to be 18.2% and that of impaired fasting glucose 20.4% in adult subjects ≥20 years of age living at Elqobaniyah village, Almontazah, Alexandria Governorate.
2) The distribution of diabetic cases in the studied sample shows that, 3 patients had type l DM (1.6%) of which 2 were males (66.7%) and 1 was female (33.3%), 173 patients had type 2 DM (95.1%) of which 65 were males (37.6%) and 108 were females (62.4%), 2 females had GDM (1.1%) and 4 cases had secondary DM (2.2%).
3) The prevalence of diabetes mellitus increased with advanced age, the percentage of diabetes mellitus rose to 28.6% in those aged above 60 years. While the prevalence of impaired fasting glucose was found to be irrelevant with age with a percentage of (26.5%) for those who are in the fourth decade of life.
4) The prevalence of diabetes and impaired fasting glucose was found to be more prevalent in females than males.
5) The prevalence of the previously known diabetics was 15.4% (154 cases) of total 182 diabetic patients and the newly discovered diabetics 2.8% (28 cases) of total 182 diabetic patients.
