Abstract

Breast cancer is the most common malignancy in females. BCT is the preferable treatment for women with early stage breast cancer. Overall survival of women undergoing BCT is equivalent to mastectomy.
Oncoplastic breast surgery (OPS) has emerged as a new approach to allow wide excision for BCS without compromising the natural shape of the breast. It is based upon integration of plastic surgery techniques for immediate breast reshaping after wide excision for breast cancer.
Retro glandular approach is a novel oncoplastic technique that permits excision of deeply seated breast masses through a hidden incision in the inframammary crease with excellent cosmetic outcome.
This study was conducted on 20 female patients admitted to the Surgical Oncology Unit, Alexandria Main University Hospital, who were eligible for BCT. An inframammary crease incision was made at the inframammary fold of the breast, and retro mammary space dissection was achieved from behind the mass. Then, excision with safety margin was done. Also, axillary dissection or SLNB could be performed through the same incision or separate axillary incision.
The study assessed the cosmetic results of retro glandular approach as an oncoplastic technique on patients with deeply seated breast masses in the absence of a contraindication. According to surgeon assessment, 13 patients (65%) showed excellent results, 4 patients (20%) showed good results, while 3 patients (15%) showed fair results. According to patients’ satisfaction, 18 patients (90%) were satisfied with their results while 2 patients (10%) were not satisfied.
