Abstract

A remarkable growth in some industrialized countries was
recognized lately in the pharmaceutical industry field, which serves
as national security of the state. This was due to some changes that
have been occurred in national and multinational pharmaceutical
sector as a whole, that consequently resulted in a significant
technological development.
The core of our research is to stabilize processes done inside
the supply chain of the pharmaceutical sector, beginning from
customers‟ demands, with information shared till distributors, to
reach an improved operational performance. The main objective of
the research is to point on the vital difficulties that faced the Egyptian
pharmaceutical sector during the stabilization process to improve
performance. The heart of our research is the inventory management
IM which is the key to improve operational performance.
The problem is analyzed, strengths and weaknesses of the
sector is identified to measure the effect of inventory management
control systems in the supply chain, follows by a set of solutions and
recommendations to guarantee the stability of the supply chain to
improve operational performance (which is the aim of the research
study). The problem exists in the supply chain stability, to complete
its processes smoothly and effectively from the beginning of the
chain till the end, the way that can impact on the operational
performance positively.
By examining variables of the study, errors can be depicted,
to minimize distortion problems of the supply chain that result in a
phenomenon of “Amplification Effect”, in which it stops the
activities inside the chain completely from doing its work properly.
All this, in order to keep prevent the chain for better work, and to
ensure its stability to improve operational performance.
Added that, comparative studies and theoretical background
of the research help the researcher to measure and evaluate the
relationship between supply chain inventory management SCIM as
an independent variable with its dimensions (supply chain dynamical
control system, and supply chain integration {suppliers – customers‟
relationship), and operational performance OP as a dependent
iii
variable with its dimensions (cost reduction, improved quality,
delivery time, service flexibility & response).
Statistically, through problem, questions and framework of
the study, the researcher formulate one main hypothesis and four subhypotheses, to evaluate the relationship between supply chain
inventory management and operational performance in the
pharmaceutical sector in Egypt. Then by conducting and developing a
questionnaire, survey forms have been distributed (338) to collect
data from the employees in this sector to verify the validity and
reliability of data collection tool, using Alpha Cronbach‟s method
that ranges between (0.838, 0.956), which are higher than the
acceptable value (0.60), based on a number of statistical methods.
Analysis of data and hypotheses tests were done, and the study found
the following results:
1- Employees’ perception for the independent variable is weak, and
employee’s perception for the dependent variable is moderate.
2- The researcher rejected the Null hypothesis ”There is no
statistically significant impact of Supply Chain Inventory
Management on the improvement of the Operational
Performance”, and proved the accuracy of the alternative one
”There is a statistically significant impact of Supply Chain
Inventory Management on the improvement of the
Operational Performance”. And confirmed this by proving the
perfection of the alternative four sub-hypotheses emanating from it
3- The results showed a general positive relationship between both
independent and dependent variables within a significant
improvement of a dynamical inventory control system and the
integration between suppliers and customers on the operational
performance of the pharmaceutical organizations. Yet, the
infrastructure of political and governmental policies of the sector
was accepted as the most important factor affecting on improving
operational performance.
Then, the researcher presented the relationship mentioned
above through a proposed framework which displayed supply chain
inventory management (SCIM) with its dimensions and the
operational performance (OP) with its dimensions in the
pharmaceutical organizations to centralize pharmaceutical industry
supply chain to improve operational performance. Also, the
iv
researcher used all the dimensions of the study to prove that there is a
positive relationship between both variables, hence a significant
impact of the mentioned dimensions on each other.
Finally, the researcher draws the following recommendations to
be applied in the pharmaceutical sector, as follows:
1) Addressing personal difficulties, such as lack of professional
skills, by employing experienced workers, and building
administrative classes to enhance organizations efficiency.
2) Seeking innovative ways through entrepreneurs to promote
positive competition with other foreign products.
1- Developing a positive attitude towards a challenging business
environment to gain competitive advantage.
2- Developing strategies that help to strengthen products and
services of the mentioned sector to improve the work.
3- Adhering compliance is a must, added; timing, procurement and
inventory management in the supply chain, and imposing
training programs of internal staff, all this help to improve the
operational performance of pharmaceutical organizations.
4- Changing the educational system of the mentioned sector to be
focused on the orientation of culture.
5- Promoting full integration of new values in universities of the
pharmaceutical sector, as civil scientific research, anti-corruption
studies and technological studies, etc.
6- Local residents must believe that corruption is a ”cut worm” eat
deep into the progressive state, affecting development and
economic growth, this needs strong civil studies to help fight
corruption.
7- Cooperation of the organizations in the mentioned sector
together to discuss the tools and means of pharmaceutical
monopoly in Egypt.
8- Managers are expected to use existing media platforms for
advertising and awareness creation.
Recommendations suggested by the researcher:
1) Establishing of a device to provide annual necessary information
about stock size, according to R & D Budget & under the
responsibility of senior management cooperated with department
stores.
v
2) Applying monthly mathematical formulas to determine the
optimal point of both active & safety stocks to reduce inventory
risks, according to R & D Budget & under the responsibility of
senior management, research, warehouse & procurement
departments.
3) A monthly follow up of all inventory items concerning price &
quantity to avoid risk of stock depletion, according to both
research & stores department & under the responsibility of senior,
research & warehouse departments.
4) A daily careful handling of stock size so as not to exceed the
appropriate limit, according to R & D Budget & under the
responsibility of senior, research & warehouse departments.
5) An annual follow-up of all technological developments of
applying modern stock systems, according to R & D budget &
under the responsibility of the above departments.
