Abstract

Caesarean section is one of the most commonly performed operations. Postoperative infectious morbidity is still a significant complication after caesarean section. About 0.3 to 17% of women suffer from surgical site infection after caesarean section despite the use of prophylactic antibiotics. This complication leads to slow recovery from surgery. Increased medical costs and affects the mother ability to care for her baby. Wound infection risk factors include obesity, diabetes, corticosteroid thereby, immunosupperession, anemia, hypertension, and inadequate hemostasis with hematoma formation. Post- caesarean infection is associated with repeated vaginal examination, prolonged rupture of membrane, prolonged labor, and internal monitors in labor, intra partum bacterial vaginosis, and presence of immune-compromised state such as diabetes mellitus, anaemia or obesity. The occurrence of this complication despite the use prophylactic antibiotics leads to multiple trials to find additional interventions such as preoperative vaginal cleansing and the use of povidone-iodine irrigation of subcutaneous tissue to minimize wound infections following cesaraen delivery. This randomized controlled trial was performed at Assiut university where () women who were undergoing Cs. Were included, in group A () of them the subcutaneous tissue with povi iodine and was no mobbed and no intervention in group B ().The aim of the study was to evaluate the efficacy of povi iodine in reducing post caesarean wound complication. We included in our study all women having caesarean section either elective, first time or repeat CS except those who were known to have allergic betadine, ROM. Povi-iodine suppository was well tolerated, easily performed, and cheap procedure that showed no allergic reactions. The study found an overall rate of CS wound infection of 13.7%,12% in the study group and 15.4 % in controls. The study showed lower rates of post caesarean wound infection in the women who povi iodine but the difference between two the two group was not statistically significant. There was no benefit of povi-iodine in decreasing wound infection following caesarean section.
