Abstract

Mental health problems are one of the most common disorders now among chronic diseases. And child and adolescents’ psychiatric problems have a high prevalence among psychiatric disorders and it is accompanied by many morbidities significantly behavioral, emotional, impair social and educational level. Since one in five people worldwide affected by mental health problems. Despite its high prevalence and disabling nature, mental health problems especially child psychiatry has continued to be under-recognized and under-treated, even in developed countries.
Child and adolescents are an important specific population who need more attentions regarding their health and quality of life which will reflect on their academic performance and their sharing in different activities in the society, moreover their future role in different aspects of life.
This study is cross sectional, questionnaire-based study applied to children aged from 4 to 11-year-old who are newly referred to pediatric psychiatry outpatient clinic at Beni-Suef university hospital. the child samples are selected after attending the clinic and diagnosed by the clinician during the period of 6 months from December 2017 to June 2018 it detects the prevalence and characteristics of child mental difficulties and study the accompanying behavioral and social problems.
The study included 90 child different educational years who were asked to fill the questionnaire by their parents. This questionnaire consisted open and close ended questions applied to the parents, and also to child more than 11-year-old.
The results of this study can be summarized in these points:
• Most children were boys (73.3%) and only (26.7%) were girls.
• Nearly two thirds (75.6%) of the children were from rural areas and only (24.2%) were from urban areas.
• About (11.1%) of the participated children were with positive family history of psychiatric disorders.
• Nearly half of the children (51.1%) have previous chronic medical disease and (48.9%) without any diseases.
• Development problems were the most recorded disorder among children (56.7 %) followed by Attention and activity problems (48.9%) then Awkward and troublesome behavior (8.9%).
• About (74.4%) of participated children had only one diagnosis, (23.4%) had two diagnosis, and (2.2%) were with more than two diagnosis.
• The IQ test was performed to 50 children with mean 66.18 + 10.72.
• Therapeutic Services received by participated children were psychotherapy, medication and combined psychotherapy and medication.
