Abstract

The present study was designed to demonstrate the effect of nasturtium on fertility of male albino rat through studying its effect on weight index of sex organs (testicles, prostate gland, seminal vesicles and semen picture), sex hormones, (total testosterone. LH, FSH and prolactin) as well as histopathological changes of sex organs. The animals were classified randomly into 3 groups as In this experiment, sixty mature male albino rats weighing from (180-200 gm.), each of (4-5months age) were used in this study. The animals were classified randomly into 3 equal groups, each of 20 rats as following:
The first group given flowers extract of nasturtium orally using stomach tube at dose of (250mg/kg B wt. /day, orally) daily for 4 weeks. The second group given leaves extract of nasturtium orally using stomach tube at dose of (250mg/kg B wt. /day, orally) daily for 4 weeks. The third group Contains 20 rats given distilled water daily for 30 days and kept as control.
On the 10 days, the 20 days and the 30 days post treatment, blood sample was collected from 5 rats after scarification in centrifuge tubes for serum preparation for estimation of serum FSH, LH, total testosterone as well as prolactin. After collection of blood, rats were dissected out and their testicles, seminal vesicles, and prostate glands were taken and weighed for calculating sex organs index weight. Then they were put in jars containing 10%formol saline solution to be used for histopathological study.
