Abstract

Throughout this thesis, the theoretical study helped in understanding what is Media façade, Media architecture and Urban Screens through the definitions, the applications and the development of this technology. Many types of media façade according to the architects; M. Hank Haeusler and Daasglard categorizations were discussed. The statement of the components of efficient urban screens that gives the best results are demonstrated and followed by the illustration of the details about the role of urban screens in the urban spaces. Urban screens have a great impact on the economic and business field, they send messages to the viewers creating a fertile advertising platform. Also, the urban screens can play its role through the reactive technology that reacts towards the surrounding environment such as the weather or the light. In addition, urban screens are used in events, creating new space for social interaction. However, the application of this technique has some physical restrictions such as the location of the display from the viewer, the screen angle in order to be properly seen, the presence of land scape as it might prevent viewing the display, and the relation between the displays and the street so that the screens do not negatively affect the drivers.
Then, through the next chapters, the meaning of the city image is illustrated through its elements and the creation of cognitive map in human perception by the nonphysical and the physical components. According to kevin Lynch there are five major points that builds the city image in the human perception (paths, edges, districts, landmarks and nodes). Through this thesis we zoomed in our focus on the nodes by mentioning the definition and its importance throughout the years. Reaching the role of urban screens economically, politically, psychologically, ecologically and socially. This all crystalizes the concept of urban space. According to some urban planners and architects, specific requirements are determined for efficient urban square.
In the practical part of this thesis the evaluation of some urban spaces that deployed the urban screens technique through the criteria that is extracted from the theoretical part in order to analyze the impact of this technique on the space.
The results show the effectiveness and the importance of these applications on the urban space as this technique had a great impact on the city image that is built through the human perception. The dynamic appearance of the urban screens gives different appearance for the same space, sequentially helping in city branding. These lights attract tourists and visitors providing new urban space for social activities.
