Abstract

The global non alcoholic fatty liver (NAFLD) disease results from obesity and represents one of the most urgent healthcare challenges worldwide. Several strategies were tested to reduce obesity and alleviate its associated metabolic diseases. Among these, novel therapeutic approaches based on enriching the diet with bioactive foods have gained attention of nutritionists and biomedical researchers.
Low-molecular-weight plant polyphenol curcumin (diferuloy methane), obtained from turmeric (Curcuma longa) roots, has been used in medicine the countries of South-East Asia for 4000 years. The beneficial effects of curcumin against NAFLD, metabolic disorders, inflammation, malignancies, and a variety of other pathophysiologic conditions have been ascertained in numerous clinical trials.
Curcumin has been found to have antioxidant and hepatoprotective activities. One of the most important factors considered to be responsible for all the activity of curcumin in its ability to scavenge reactive oxygen and nitrogen free radicals. The free radical scavenging activity of curcumin involves a radical trapping at the phenolic position as in the case of other phenolic antioxidant s. The pharmacological safety and efficiency of curcumin makes it a potential compound for treatment and prevention of a wide variety of human diseases.
