Abstract

Residues of veterinary drugs in poultry meat have serious health effects on humans (e.g., increase antimicrobial resistance, carcinogenicity, mutagenicity and hypersensitivity) which make the control of veterinary drug residues an important parameter in ensuring consumer protection. This work was performed to quantitatively determine cefepime residues in different tissues of rabbits (kidneys, liver, and muscles) following multiple I/M doses of the drug using High Performance Liquid chromatography (HPLC). Moreover, the study aimed to estimate the withdrawal time of this drug in rabbits tissues.
The experiment was conducted on 24 growing NZW rabbits of both sexes at 35 days after weaning, they were randomly allocated into two equal groups; group 1 (negative control, n=12) was administered sterile normal saline and group 2 (n=12) was injected I/M with a single dose of 75 mg/kg BW (10%) cefepime hydrochloride once daily for 5 successive days. Three samples (liver, kidney, and breast muscle) were collected from each slaughtered rabbit (n=3) at four withdrawal periods for HPLC investigation (at 1st, 3rd, 7th, and 14th day) and four withdrawal periods (at 1st, 3rd, 7th, and 14th day) for biochemical studies following the last I/M medication dose.
