Abstract This work is to prepare modified polyvinyl acetate copolymer to improve the paint properties such as scrub resistance, water absorption, gloss and hardness of the applied film. Application of polyvinyl acetate in the paint industry was improved by copolymerization of vinyl acetate based binders with softer comonomers. Since 1960, many comonomers were introduced to improve the properties of the coating by polyvinyl acetate starting with vinyl versatate (VeoVA), and different comonomers such as esters of acrylic acid and esters of maleic acid. This work experiments the effect of the blending of two comonomers to be copolymerized with vinyl acetate and to study how is the reaction, the properties of the resulted polymer and the properties of the prepared latex paints using this polymer. |
